JULBOT – platform for the use of robotic technologies

The JULBOT platform is a university project that applies modern Industry 5.0 tools with an emphasis on the integration of autonomous, robotic, inspection and digital technologies. The platform allows for flexible configuration according to the type of activity performed.

Close cooperation with industrial partners in terms of research and development is currently underway aimed at addressing a wide range of applications from specific tasks to pilot testing in the real geological environment of the Josef Underground Laboratory.

One of the configurations, JULBOT version 1.0, is designed to solve a range of demanding tasks associated with in-depth exploration and the inspection and monitoring of buildings. This contributes to increasing the safety and efficiency of the work processes involved since it allows for exploration and management in environments that are difficult for humans to access or are even potentially dangerous. JULBOT 1.0 differs from similar robotic systems in terms of its high degree of robustness and resistance to extreme conditions.

The platform is employing a digital model of the Josef Underground Laboratory for the pilot operation phase. The use of the BIM and GIS models is bidirectional:

  • the model serves for the navigation and guidance of the robot in one direction,
  • the robot is able to transmit any deviations and other data captured in the real environment back to the digital model in the opposite direction.

This means that the entire platform is transformed to the level of a digital twin.

JULBOT1.0, which focuses on the inspection and monitoring of structures, comprises a remotely-controlled system that combines robotic technology with digitalisation tools. It is equipped with sensors that enable the comprehensive perception and analysis of the surrounding spaces, including the detection and semi-autonomous identification of various objects, such as buildings, people and other structures, including underground spaces.

The platform also provides opportunities for the conducting of projects involving drones, including drone swarming.

An emphasis on education and training for both students and external users forms an integral part of the project.
